Biography

Gabriella Okoobo (b. 1997) is a Dutch Nigerian, Amsterdam/London-based artist and documentary photographer. After completing a photography program with FOAM and Meervaart she moved on to pursue an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at The University of the Arts London with an artist scholarship from het Cultuurfonds.

Rooted in a research-driven approach, she combines personal and collective histories that shape one’s sense of self, utilising elements such as (self) portraiture, performance, film, and mixed media. Through this approach, her work investigates layers of memory, emotion, (internal)conflict and resilience, exploring how these intangible elements intersect with physical materials and landscapes. Ultimately, Gabriella aims to challenge traditional narratives and craft a dialogue that highlights the potential for transformation in current perceived notions of worth and place within society, while also examining the dynamic interplay between cultural engagement and societal expectations.
